A newly purchased purple clay teapot (Zisha teapot) cannot be used directly for brewing tea. Before its first use, it must undergo a series of preparation steps that tea connoisseurs call "opening the pot" or "seasoning the teapot." Once properly seasoned, it's best to dedicate each teapot to brewing only one type of tea for optimal flavor development.

Regardless of which seasoning method you choose, you should first inspect the teapot's integrity. Check for any damage or defects, and ensure all components are complete. Then, rinse the teapot thoroughly with clean water. Below, we'll introduce the traditional classic method for opening your Yixing purple clay teapot.

Step 1: Awakening the Teapot (醒壶)

During the awakening process, rinse the interior and exterior walls, lid, spout, and entire body of the Zisha teapot with clean water. Then place it in a clean, odor-free pot filled with water and bring it to a boil. After the water boils, reduce to low heat and simmer for 30 minutes. Turn off the heat and allow it to cool naturally. Remember, the water must completely cover the entire teapot body for thorough awakening and to remove any residual clay dust or kiln odors.

Step 2: Moistening the Teapot (润壶)

This is the saturation process that prepares your purple clay teapot for tea brewing. Fill the teapot with tea leaves (approximately one-third of the pot's capacity), add boiling water, cover with the lid, and pour boiling water over the exterior of the pot from top to bottom. Let it sit undisturbed for 6-8 hours, allowing the tea fragrance to be absorbed into the porous clay and eliminating any other odors.

Pro tip: We do not recommend using tofu or sugarcane as substitutes for tea leaves—authentic tea is the most appropriate choice for moistening your Yixing teapot. Use the same type of tea you plan to brew regularly in this pot.

Step 3: Drying the Teapot (晾壶)

Also called air-drying. Remove the tea leaves from the pot, rinse the teapot body with purified water, and place it in a well-ventilated, dry area to air-dry naturally. Avoid direct sunlight or heat sources. With this step, the opening process for your purple clay teapot is complete, and your teapot is ready for its first proper brewing session.
