Shen Tong Yan Rougui | Wuyi Zheng Yan Rock Oolong — Cliff-Grown, Pure Cinnamon Power

Shen Tong Yan Rougui | Wuyi Zheng Yan Rock Oolong — Cliff-Grown, Pure Cinnamon Power

The Connoisseur’s Rougui — Shen Tong Yan Zheng Yan

Grown on the sheer cliff faces of Shen Tong Yan — deep within the core zheng yan (正岩) zone of Wuyishan — this is Rougui at its most authentic and most powerful. The moment boiling water hits the leaves, the cinnamon-bark fragrance surges upward with an immediacy and clarity that stops you in your tracks. This is the Rougui that seasoned tea drinkers return to, again and again.

A Cinnamon Aroma That Hits Immediately

No build-up. No waiting. The lid lifts and the cinnamon is there — sharp, clean, and concentrated, rising straight to the nose with the kind of focused intensity that only true zheng yan terroir can produce. Not aggressive, not harsh. Just pure, precise cinnamon power, exactly as it should be.

Three Layers of Fragrance

Top Note — Lid Aroma: Sharp, clean cinnamon-bark spice leads — crisp and focused, never rough or dry. Beneath it, a refined white peach honey sweetness and a whisper of delicate orchid blossom add elegance and lift to the intensity.

Mid Note — Fragrance in the Liquor: A distinctive cool, clean cliff-rock woodiness runs through the liquor — the unmistakable breath of the Shen Tong Yan cliff face. The fruit sweetness doesn’t float; it sinks deep into the body of the tea, grounded and integrated. A thread of cool, clear yan yun (岩韵) weaves through every sip.

Base Note — Cold Cup: Set the gaiwan aside. A lasting honey-sweet floral fragrance remains — clean, pure, and completely free of any roast or off-notes. And in the quiet of the cold cup, a subtle, fleeting creaminess emerges — the gentle signature of medium-roast craftsmanship at its finest.

Long, Resonant Rock Yun

The yan yun (岩韵) of Shen Tong Yan Rougui is not a flash — it is a sustained resonance. Deep, cool, and mineral, it builds through the session and lingers long after the last cup. The kind of aftertaste that experienced drinkers seek and rarely find at this level.

Product Description

Shen Tong Yan Rougui is a zheng yan (正岩) Wuyi Rock Oolong grown on the cliff faces of Shen Tong Yan — one of the most storied and prized sites within the core rock zone of Wuyishan. The sheer cliff terrain, mineral-saturated rock soil, and the cool, clean mountain air that flows through the valley combine to produce a Rougui of exceptional purity, focus, and depth.

The cinnamon-bark fragrance is immediate and concentrated — the moment the lid is lifted, it surges upward with a clarity and intensity that is unmistakably zheng yan. Sharp and clean, never rough or dry, it is joined by a refined white peach honey sweetness and a delicate whisper of orchid blossom that add elegance without softening the power.

In the liquor, a distinctive cool cliff-rock woodiness runs through every sip — the breath of the Shen Tong Yan cliff face, clean and mineral, grounding the fruit sweetness that sinks deep into the body of the tea. The yan yun (岩韵) is long and cool, building steadily through the session and staying well after the last cup.

In the cold cup, a lasting honey-sweet floral fragrance remains — pure and clean, with a subtle, fleeting creaminess that emerges quietly: the gentle mark of medium-roast craftsmanship done right.

This is the Rougui that seasoned drinkers reach for when they want the real thing.

Brewing Guidance

Vessel: Gaiwan or small Yixing teapot (recommended)
Water Temperature: 100°C (212°F) — fully boiling water to unlock the full power of the zheng yan cinnamon aroma
Leaf Amount: 8.3g per 100–150ml

Steeping Guide:
• Infusions 1–3: Pour and drain immediately — flash-brew to capture the sharp, concentrated cinnamon lid aroma at its most vivid. Do not steep or stew.
• Infusions 4 and beyond: Gradually increase steeping time by 5–10 seconds with each steep.

⚠️ Important: Never cover and steep (no stewing). The clean, focused character of Shen Tong Yan Rougui is best preserved with short, controlled infusions — over-steeping will mask the cliff woodiness and flatten the layered fragrance.

Number of Infusions: 8–10 infusions

Tips:
• Use fully boiling water — this zheng yan tea demands and rewards it
• After each session, smell the cold gaiwan lid — the honey-floral finish and hidden creaminess are among this tea’s most distinctive pleasures
• Best appreciated in a quiet, focused session — the yan yun of Shen Tong Yan reveals itself slowly and rewards patience
